The Pulse of Bulawayo — News, Culture & Community
ByoZim is Bulawayo's premier digital news and community platform, dedicated to telling the stories that matter to the City of Kings and Queens. From the historic streets of Makokoba to the tree-lined avenues of the Suburbs, we are the voice of Zimbabwe's second-largest city — unfiltered, authentic, and deeply rooted in the community we serve.
Our Story
Bulawayo is a city of profound contrasts and resilience. Founded in 1894 on the site of King Lobengula's royal kraal, it carries the name "Bulawayo" — the Ndebele word for "the place of slaughter" — marking the battles fought during Lobengula's rise to power . Yet from this dramatic history emerged what locals affectionately call the "City of Kings and Queens" — a place of wide lined streets, Victorian architecture, and an indomitable spirit .
ByoZim was born from a recognition that Bulawayo's stories deserved dedicated, digital-first coverage. While national media focused on Harare, we saw a city rich with narrative: from the industrial heritage of the Railway Museum to the vibrant arts scene at the National Gallery; from the struggles of waste pickers at Ngozi Mine to the international literary success of NoViolet Bulawayo ; from the ambitious urban development plans of Bulawayo City Council to the everyday triumphs of ordinary residents.
We launched ByoZim to ensure these stories — your stories — find their audience.

Why Bulawayo Matters
Bulawayo is unlike any other Zimbabwean city:
Historical Significance: The site of King Lobengula's capital, the 1893 Matabele War, and the cultural heart of the Ndebele nation.
Architectural Beauty: "The best laid-out city in Zimbabwe" with wide streets designed for 16-oxen wagons, Victorian and Edwardian buildings, and purple jacaranda canopies.
Cultural Richness: Home to the National Gallery, Natural History Museum (with Africa's largest collection of stuffed mammals), Railway Museum, and the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair
Geographic Importance: The axis of Southern African transport, linking South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe
